Club History

Cardiff Medics Hockey Club (CMHC) has been in existence for a long as anyone still associated with the club can remember and is run along side its sister club Cardiff Medics Ladies Hockey Club. It used to be compromised of students from the University of Wales College of Medicine (UWCM) until 2004 when it merged with Cardiff University, from whom the club now draws its student members (who are predominantly healthcare students). Despite the merger of institutions, the club and its members still hold dear to their hearts the heritage and values that UWCM encompassed.

Until recently the club had a small members base and competed in the lower echelons of ‘The West of England & South Wales Hockey League’ (WOESW), the league which we regard as the yard stick against which to measure the standard of hockey our teams are regularly attaining. Since the merger a number of dedicated captains and players have helped the rise of the fortunes of the club both on and off the field.

Notably the formation of a 2nd XI (2005), increased recruitment of members and retention of ‘old boys’, a new look and consolidated committee, new kit, regular training slots, appointing a coach and finally finding somewhere akin to a home pitch (Treforest). These have all helped to improve and maintain the stability the club. We now have a great blend of students and qualified professionals with a variety of disciplines within healthcare and of other professions.

Recent successes on the pitch include successive promotions of the 1st XI in the WOESW in 2004-5, 2005-6, 2006-7 (now competing in North Division 2) and in   2008-9 in BUCS (now competing in South 2B); successful promotion of the 2nd XI in 2005-6 (now competing in South Wales Division 2), winning ‘NAMS’ in 2005, the Welsh Universities and TITS in 2008.

The club currently competes in several competitions every year:

  • 2 regular domestic leagues:- WOESW, BUCS (formerly known as BUSA)
  • 1 National league:- NAMS league
  • 2 annual weekend tournaments: ‘NAMS’ and ‘TITS’
  • Several national knockout tournaments; Welsh Cup, 2nd XI Welsh Cup, Welsh Universities, Welsh Indoor tournament

The social side of the club is legendary with tales of Medclub, tour and ladies sports teams resounding in our ears every time we talk to a senior player. Weekends away, the annual Medics Varsity against the football and netball teams, golf days and of course regular Wednesday socials maintain the high standards of social interaction and the enjoyment of playing for Medics hockey. We look forward to returning to our spiritual home, Medclub, next season after its rebuilding.
